BYRON — An explosion destroyed the park restroom area of Byron’s Bethany State Reservoir and Park on Tuesday. The bomb leveled the restroom area, and could easily have injured or killed someone if park visitors had been within 100 yards of the facility when the explosive device went off – the area in which the debris was scattered.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office was the first to respond at approximately 2:30 p.m., after receiving a call that the restroom had been destroyed by what appeared to be an explosion.

The Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (NCRIC) stated that the bomb was constructed from a radial car tire, filled with several pounds of gunpowder, compressed and sealed using large, metal bands, then wrapped in duct tape. The device appears to have been set to go off at a particular time. Agencies that are involved in a joint investigation include: Alameda County Sheriff, F.B.I., NCRIC and California State Parks Police.

There were tire tracks near the debris area may have belonged to the person who set the device, but no motive or information about a possible suspect is available at this time.

Bethany Reservoir State Recreation Area is located in Byron, at 4900 Bruns Ave. (between Christensen & Kelso Roads).

  1. I was up looking at the bomb site two days after it happened and it was eerily quiet. I took a video of it. The bathroom was demolished. The tire that was used was taken for evidence. It appears anyone within the bathroom surely would have been killed. Im retired and was on my way from San Jose to Stockton to see my daughter. It took a while for me to find this place. Let’s hope and pray they catch these people.
