State Route 4/Sand Creek Road Interchange Project

Last week, Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) and Caltrans held a groundbreaking ceremony for the State Route 4 (SR4)/Sand Creek Road Interchange Project. This will complete a four-lane facility from south of Laurel Road to Sand Creek Road. An interchange will be constructed so that SR4 will cross over Sand Creek Road with a single bridge, and a loop for westbound Sand Creek Road to eastbound SR4.

This project is intended to provide traffic congestion relief to the significant congestion that occurs between Lone Tree Way and Sand Creek Road, and at the SR4/Sand Creek Road intersection. Anticipated completion is Spring 2014.

“This widening project will help reduce congestion on State Route 4 and save motorists time and money on their commute,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “When we consider this and other projects on the highway, residents can clearly see that their tax dollars are hard at work in Contra Costa County.”

CCTA and Caltrans are also widening SR4 to four lanes in each direction in Antioch and Pittsburg. Caltrans is also widening the median and shoulder in Discovery Bay.

Memorial Day Ceremony in Discovery Bay

Memorial Day Ceremony in Discovery Bay

On Memorial Weekend, the Sea Ray Yacht Club conducted a moving ceremony in “Honor of the Fallen.” The ceremony was held on a floating stage, along with the help of the Discovery Bay Yacht Club, and more than a dozen veterans, who shared their service.

Hundreds of people turned out to view the ceremony by water and from land, by lining Harbor Drive, off Marina Road, and from homes around the bay.

Karen Mann, with the Discovery Bay Yacht Club said the club “was proud to have so many Discovery residents come out to watch and participate in the ceremony. Also, for all of the children in attendance – there to understand the true significance of Memorial Day Weekend.”

Highway 4 Commute Ranked #10 Worst in U.S.

According to a national traffic study, the East Contra Costa County commute on Highway 4 is amongst the worst in the nation.

The CA-4 Eastbound commute, between Bailey Road and Sommersville Road, is well known for it’s daily traffic congestion.  Despite ongoing highway improvements along Highway 4, the traffic problem actually ranks worse than in 2010, when it was ranked #13.

In the reverse direction, CA-4 Westbound from Hillcrest to Sommersville ranked #26, compared to #25 in 2010.

Results announced in May, by independent traffic study group INRIX, also revealed several other highly congested corridors in the Bay Area. Ultimately, ranking the Bay Area the #3 worst region in the country for traffic. Factors included congestion and commute times.
